Here on the Fountain of Youth Plastic Surgery blog, we recently published this blog, which provided a general overview of acne and cosmetic medicine acne treatment options. As briefly mentioned in this past blog, at Fountain of Youth Plastic Surgery in Palm Harbor, Florida, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. C. Randall Harrell, M.D. offers BLU-U® Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator for the treatment of moderate acne.

BLU-U® has been FDA cleared to treat moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris.[1] If you have moderate acne and have found that other common acne treatments (e.g., topical and oral antibiotics, topical benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and azelic acid ointments, topical or oral retinoid medicines, oral contraceptive pills (birth control pills) containing low doses of estrogen, androgen blocking medications, and etc.) have been unsuccessful or unsuitable for your needs, ask your doctor if you are a good candidate for BLU-U®.

BLU-U® is not actually a laser. A laser delivers light as coherent beams; however, BLU-U® delivers incoherent light that is scattered over a larger area of skin.[2] BLU-U® delivers a unique blue light treatment that kills the P.acnes bacteria in your skin.[3]

BLU-U® light treatment is relatively simple. You will sit with the BLU-U® light treatment close to your face for approximately seventeen minutes, once or twice a week, for about five weeks or so.[4] Your healthcare provider will help tailor a treatment schedule to fit your individual needs and acne problems. One of the best things about BLU-U® light treatment is that it is neither hot nor painful. While the procedure itself is not painful, some patients will experience skin reddening, swelling, scaling, and itching after treatment.[5] Fortunately, these side effects are almost always temporary and should subside within four weeks of your last treatment session.[6]

Keep in mind that results from BLU-U® light treatment will vary from patient to patient. It can take time to see results and follow-up treatments may be necessary. Also, in order for patients to achieve optimal results and mitigate any side effects as best as possible, patients need to be vigilant about following his or her doctor’s instructions for before, during, and after BLU-U® light treatment.

For example, during treatment patients should not wash their face in between treatment steps. Additionally, patients must take due care to avoid exposing the treatment area to sunlight and other forms of bright lights (e.g., exam room lights, operating room lights, tanning bed lights, household lights at close range, and etc.) for at least 40 hours after treatment.[7] Applying sunscreen will not protect your skin against photosensitivity reactions during this time period.[8]

While acne may be common, that does not mean that you have to live with it. Take control of your skin at Fountain of Youth Plastic Surgery in Palm Harbor, Florida. In addition to providing non-surgical cosmetic medicine procedures such as BLU-U® light therapy for acne, we also specialize in surgical cosmetic treatments such as breast augmentation, tummy tucks, face lifts, and mommy makeovers.
